Design Your Life in Reverse (Before You Spend Another Year on the Wrong Path)
Here’s what almost nobody does before they spend a dime on college or a day in a career:
They ask where they want to live. Not the job title. The life.
How do you want your days to feel? What do you want for your family? What does a Tuesday look like when you’re not performing for a boss?
Most people skip that. They pick a path that looks “smart,” invest years and six figures into it, then feel guilty for wanting out — because quitting feels like setting fire to the sunk cost.
That’s the trap.
You were told to choose at 17
At 17 you can’t get a credit card easily. You definitely can’t get a mortgage. You can’t get a loan to start a real business without a co-signer and a lecture.
But they’ll happily load you with $300k in student debt for a degree path you barely understand.
Then you spend a decade climbing. You get good at the game. Your resume looks sharp. People call you successful.
And somehow you still feel guarded and guilty about leaving — because you “invested so much to get here.”
Of course you feel that way. That’s not weakness. That’s what the system trains you to feel.
Tito’s didn’t start with a job title
Bert “Tito” Beveridge (that’s his name not a misprint, but certainly a good pun) didn’t inherit a vodka empire. He built it after corporate life didn’t fit — homemade batches, rejected by distributors, told it wouldn’t work. He kept going until the product was undeniable.
The point isn’t “become a vodka king.” The point is: the mainstream path is not the only path. Permission is optional. Proof is not.
You can create your own lane. Most of the people who told you what you “couldn’t” do were full of it — including the version of you that believed them at 15 when the grades weren’t perfect.
Design the destination first
Before you spend another year optimizing a job you hate:
Lifestyle — Sleep, family time, location, money floor, freedom ceiling.
Income model — Employment-only, or income you own (services, products, consulting, digital).
Reverse path — What skills, offers, and runway get you from here to that Tuesday.
Good news: you can do this at 25, 30, 37, 43, 50. Nobody knows what they want at 17. Pretending they did is how you end up stuck with a square peg and a round hole.
You’re not broke. You’re not dumb. Your resume is fine. You’re often more grateful than you sound when you step back.
So why the suffocation? Why the restlessness?
Because you did a lot of things “right” on a path that doesn’t lead to the life you actually want.
Stop asking for permission
Permission from who? HR? Your parents’ fear? LinkedIn?
The thing holding you up is usually you — the story that you owe the degree, the title, the sunk cost.
Life is flying by. Slow it down long enough to design the destination. Then build (or buy) the income that funds it.
